Sales pipeline looks at each deal (what stages does each deal go through, how much is it worth); sales funnel looks by quantity (how many leads come in, at what step). Pipeline answers "how much potential sales", funnel answers "where are the bottlenecks". Use both, no confusion. Zenify records that the cost of acquiring new customers is 5-25 times higher than retaining old customers (approved).
TL;DR
- Pipeline: look at deals — value of each deal.
- Funnel: look at quantity — how many leads come in, where do they fall.
- Pipeline answers "how much is close to closing".
- Funnel answers "at which step does the customer fall".
- Use both in CRM for full sales management.
What is Pipeline
Sales pipeline shows each deal by stage:
Each deal has: name, value, stage, person in charge, expected closing date.
Look at the pipeline to know: potential sales, which deals are about to close, which deals are stuck.
Unit: monetary value (see Sales Pipeline).
What is Funnel
Sales funnel shows quantity through each step:
How many leads come in? How many into prospect? How many pins?
Look at the funnel to know: step-by-step conversion rate, highest drop-off point.
Unit: quantity and percentage.
Quick comparison
Criteria | Pipelines | Funnels
Nhìn theo | Từng deal | Số lượng lead
Reply | How much are you going to close | Where do customers fall
Unit | Money (deal value) | Quantity, percentage
Perspective | Manage each deal | Guest Flow Management
Use when | Follow specific deals | Optimize conversion process
How to use both
Use pipelines to:
View potential weekly/monthly sales.
Push stuck deals, take care of deals that are about to close.
Forecast: multiply the deal value by the win rate (see Forecast sales).
Use funnels to:
Detect bottlenecks: which step drops the most leads.
Compare the effectiveness of lead sources: which channel has the most traffic and good conversion.
Set a budget: increase good conversion channels, decrease weak channels.
Ví dụ thực tế
You receive 100 leads/month:
Funnel: 100 leads → 40 contacts → 15 consultations → 5 closings. Overall conversion rate 5%.
Pipeline: 5 deals being closed, 3 deals at quote (each deal 30 million) → potential sales this month ~90-120 million.
Action: The funnel seems to drop a lot in the "contactable" step → fix the contact/timing method. Pipeline saw 2 deals stuck at "quotation" for 2 weeks → called support to resolve problems.
Common confusions
Calling a pipeline a funnel and vice versa: is not intended to be used.
Just look at it: Looking at the pipeline, I don't see any bottlenecks; Looking at the funnel, I don't know which deals are "hot".
Mix data: add number of leads to deal value → meaningless data.
Not updated: both require input from CRM (see CRM Mistakes).
